History of Tsomgo Lake
Sikkim is known for rich cultural legacy and originality from its natural surroundings There is a popular mythology associated with Tsomgo Lake. Tso, and go, both meaning ahead to the Bhutia language, is where the lake derives its name. Myth has it that the lake is now where a yak stable used to exist. An elderly woman, who used to live there herself as a yak herder, had a dream ordering her to leave, because the water was about to flood the area. The older woman chose to leave, but the local herders did not trust her. As she left the area, people saw an elderly woman with snow-white hair into the valley, and soon the area was drowned with water. All the surrounding herders were drawn in by this widespread flooding of the area. The lake was subsequently given the name Tsomgo as this old lady was believed to be the protective deity of the lake. Lama used to tell the future from the lake’s changing colors. Today, with shamans, it is a revered place where residents pray once a year during Gurupurnima.
